DENTAL SERVICES

CLINICS/OFFICE SCREENINGS

We see most children at their school.  However, if we missed your child, or if you feel your child's screening cannot wait until we get to their school or child does not attend school yet, appointments for dental screening at the Health Unit can be arranged for you in North Bay, Sturgeon Falls, Parry Sound and Burk's Falls..

Health Unit Office Screening:

  • By appointment only
  • Call (705) 474-1400 or 1-800-563-2808
  • Monday to Friday - 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

EMERGENCIES

Definition:

Any dental condition of a child (age birth to grade 8) that requires immediate attention by a dentist ( i.e. toothache, mouth trauma...)

  • Call the Health Unit (normal business hours or leave detailed Voice Mail Message)  and speak with a Dental Staff Member to explain the situation.
  • Information will be collected if your child qualifies and arrangements will be made for emergency care.
  • Funding may be accessed through the CINOT (Children In Need of Treatment) program.

PREVENTIVE SERVICES

The following services help prevent dental disease and are provided free of charge (if no dental coverage) to all eligible children by qualified dental personnel:

a)    Topical Fluoride treatment (includes oral hygiene-brushing lessons)

b)    Pit and Fissure Sealants (includes fluoride treatment).

Based on sufficient response, the Preventive Clinic is normally held at the school or at the Health Unit during the summer months ( by appointment only!).  Parents consent and health history is obtained for each child eligible for treatment.

RESOURCE KITS

Dental Resource Kits are available for loan to all area teachers or leaders of children's groups who would like to promote good oral health for children.

The Resource Kits are age appropriate (pre-school to grade 4) and may contain the following:

Suggested dental lesson plans and activities

  • Hand puppets
  • Dental videos (various topics)
  • Large typodent and toothbrush
  • Disclosing solution and light

These kits are loaned out in two week time frames.  To reserve or receive further information please call:  (705) 474-1400 or 1-800-563-2808

SCHOOL SCREENINGS

  • A preliminary dental screening (visual assessment only) is done on all JK/SK students.  These screenings are carried out by a dental hygienist at all elementary schools in our district throughout the school year.  Depending on our findings at each school additional children may also be seen.
  • Parents can request their child (children) be screened at the school by calling the Health Unit (normal business hours or voice mail).
