PARTNERS IN TRAUMA PREVENTION

  • Partners in Trauma Prevention consists of community partners throughout Nipissing and East Parry Sound to South River who believe in sharing information and coordinating initiatives related to injury prevention.
  • This coalition monitors injury prevention issues, projects and initiatives occurring throughout the district, and reviews and advocates for injury prevention project development.
  • The overall goal of the coalition is to reduce injuries, morbidity and mortality by working together for healthier and safer communities.
  • The membership is open to all organizations, volunteers and citizens in these areas.
  • The coalition was formed in September 1998 through the amalgamation of two coalitions: the Community Injury Prevention Coalition (CIPC) and Nipissing component of Nipissing Timiskaming Trauma Prevention Coaltion. At that time the action committees included the Road Safety Challenge Committee, the four teams of the Falls Prevention Groups (formally CIPC) and car seat clinics, which were held 2 to 3 times per year.
  • Partners in Trauma Prevention has been successful in recruiting people from various government agencies, private and corporate sectors, and volunteers. Together, these people stimulate fresh thinking and innovative ideas with the goal to reach all sectors of the communities we serve.

Why work together as a coalition?

  • Many agencies have requirements to reduce injuries and educate our citizens. However, resources both human and financial are becoming smaller each fiscal year. Time commitments are at a premium and numerous programs are being delivered throughout the community. Thus a unified approach is needed.
  • By becoming a partner to help build this community coalition, all groups and agencies can work together to maximize our limited resources and minimize duplication and inefficiencies.
  • Together we can add creditability to the cause and bring our common goals and commitments to our residents.

SMARTRISK Backgrounder

In November 1998, SMARTRISK launched a study to describe the enormous costs of injuries, which are both human and economic. The Economic Burden of Unintentional Injury in Canada is the report that was released in December 1999 as a result of the study. The following are some key findings:

  • injuries are the leading cause of death of Canadian aged 1 to 44.
  • injuries kill more people between the ages of 1 and 20 than all other causes of death combined.
  • more than two million Canadians are treated for injuries annually at an economic cost of more than $8.7 billion.
  • 90 per cent of injuries are predictable and preventable.

This report also demonstrates how Ontarians are paying an unnecessary personal, social and economic price for unintentional and preventable injuries. For example:

  • 2,000 people in Ontario are injured daily - 85 people every hour of every day
  • The economic impact of injuries in 1996 was 42.9 billion - $260 per person. Locally, community partners including representatives from public health, district health council, emergency services, local businesses, substance abuse prevention advocates and road safety advocates have joined forces to form a community coalition active in the promotion of injury prevention and road user safety.
