Oral Health Services
Oral Health Services offers the following programs:
School Screening Program
Oral Health staff visit all elementary schools in Nipissing/Parry Sound. All children in grades JK, SK, 2 and 8 receive a dental screening. Children in other grades may be screened to follow up from last year or by parent request. Information about children’s oral health is collected for use in local and provincial planning.
The screening consists of a quick look into the mouth by a Registered Dental Hygienist using a sterilized mirror for each child. Parents are notified in advance of the screening date.
Parents are notified if the child needs to see a dentist or if they would benefit from preventive services provided by the Health Unit (free of charge). Financial assistance is available through Children in Need of Treatment/CINOT, if the cost of required treatment would be unaffordable to the family.

A very quick look into the mouth – call to arrange an appointment at 474-1400 or 1-800-563-2808. Screenings are available at different locations throughout the area.
Preventive Program
Through the screening program, children/youth may be identified for risk of dental disease. Preventive services may be offered at NO COST such as: sealants, scaling and topical fluoride.
Financial Assistance
Children in Need of Treatment / CINOT helps pay for urgent dental treatment for children/youth whose families cannot afford to pay.
Children and youth up to their 18th birthday may be covered if:
- Parents have no dental insurance or no other dental coverage
- Parents cannot afford to take their child/youth to the dentist
- There is an obvious dental problem that requires immediate attention.
